"Great" Modern Art: "Horrible" Victorian Art:

Since childhood I remember reading about how "horrible" the art of the Nineteenth Century was and about the "great" pioneers of "Modern" Art who destroyed the age old traditions Europe Art. Marxist scholar Georg Lukács asked “Who will save us from Western civilization?” And decided to create “a culture of pessimism” and “a world that has been abandoned by God.” The fruits of Cultural Marxism ugly "art" made to drive people to despair. Remember if you like the second picture better you are "hateful," a "Racist," and a "Neo-fascist."

The goal of Victorian Art as stated by Burne-Jones:
“I mean by a picture a beautiful romantic dream of something that never was, never will be — in a better light than any light that ever shone — in a land no one can define or remember, only desire — and from forms divinely beautiful.”

I love that! Nice comparison between modern and Victorian art. I still sort of hate Duchamp's piece...

Having majored in Art at a Big-Ten university, this has really struck a chord with me. Thank you for your post.

All through art school I felt something was very wrong, but couldn't quite put my finger on it. Graduate school students always had what I called a "spiel" about whatever they were doing that was psychologically confused, dark, perverse, irreverent, or just whimsical. The whimsical wasn't too bad, of course, but the actual art was secondary to the "spiel",the written "justification".

For example, one could write volumes on what would be balls of dog poop hung from the ceiling, rendering the "art" valid.

I decided that I would never have a "spiel" good enough to justify my "materialistic" art, and decided to forego grad school, though I really could draw and paint, unlike most all of the grad students. Technique was often secondary in my classes -GF
